Book Week DIY Costume: The Adventures of Paddington

Today we will be making a suitcase and marmalade sandwich from you guessed it... The Adventures of Paddington Bear!

You will need:

  • A shoe box or similar,
  • Yellow kitchen sponge
  • Cellophane
  • Brown paper
  • Coloured markers
  • String
  • A holepunch

Step by Step: Paddington Bear Costume

  1. 1.First up we will be making Paddington’s suitcase – Take your shoe or parcel box and cover it in brown paper like you’re wrapping a present! Decorate the outside with your markers and add a couple of postage stamps if you have them.
  2. 2.Attach a handle using any cardboard you have with sticky tape. Then we created Paddington’s travel tag, we added the note ‘please look after this bear’ in marker, punched a hole and attached it to the suitcase with string.
  3. 3.Paddington wouldn’t be complete without a marmalade sandwich... draw a bread slice template and cut it out.
  4. 4.Take 2 sponges, trace your template and roughly cut them into bread shapes.
  5. 5.Last step is to scrunch the cellophane before placing it between your slices of sponge bread and trim as needed. You can even add a brown edge for the crust with a marker if you like!
  6. 6.If you wanted to cut an opening in the side of the box you could always store the marmalade sandwich in the suitcase.

TIP: Add a blue jacket, red hat and gumboots and your child is ready for an adventure!
